Middle Woodland Bibliography

The bibliography offerred below includes more than 130 documents, scholalry articles, reports, and papers that address issues related to the Middle  Woodland Period in and around Central Maryland. Of these, more than 40 have been annotated. These annotations (highlighted articles below) offer the cogent points made by each author as it applies to our understanding of the Middle Woodland. Sperling sees this document as a map which may lead a researcher in the right direction, but by no means is this the end of the course. This multi-year project will continue to gather resources and will add to this bibliography, with a particular focus on incorporating the oft-ignored or overlooked technical site reports or 'grey literature.'

Sperling has used these sources over the past several months to develop a set of research questions that will guide field invesitgations in 2009 and 2010. Primary research questions posed by many scholars include settlement patterns, chronology, resource procurement, trade and exchange patterns, Ceramic and Lithic Technologies and mortuary practices. A briefing on the findings from this preliminary research can be found in a draft document titled "Middle Woodland Period in Central Maryland; A Fresh Look at Old Questions." The bibliography itself is listed alphabetically- by author, but soon, will be offered for review by selecting a research "Keyword," which will return only those specific articles relevant keyword subject matter.
